Nest: Day 56

Day 56
Make delightful D-Day kits.

I don't like these three colors together...alas.

The colors clash!

To be a happy habithacker, you need a permanent D-Day kit. I like to make everything aesthetically pleasing. Even if decluttering is about as fun as bagging grass clippings, I’m not going to use ugly old garbage bags and further degrade myself (confronting one’s clutter is degrading enough).

You could buy a Flylady declutter kit (shown left) for $14.95. My review? Pros: it folds flat. Labels printed on. Cons: Small diameter. Prone to tipping over. Colors look crappy together.  Labels are not as fabulously alliterative as my “Dump (throw away),” “Donate (give away),” and “Deliver (throw away).”

Label your own pop-up hamper.

However, you could simply purchase and label three pop-up hampers. I’d choose  squat versions, which are easier to work with.

Use colorful laundry baskets.

If you don’t require your kit to fold, you could, of course, use plastic laundry baskets or bins. I’m currently using the fun and colorful sorters shown lower right. I got them at Target.

Cool containers for D-Day.

But here’s an even cheaper, cooler, and more creative idea: take three similarly sized cardboard boxes (or file boxes) and spray paint or cover with wrapping paper. Or use plain butcher’s paper and decorate with markers. Label and voila: a totally original D-Day kit that will make you smile.

Remember: your D-Day kit consists of Dump, Donate, Deliver.

How about a paper purge today?
