SOS: Day 9
Day 9
The right time to dine.
My dad used to say to me, “Do as I say, don’t do as I do.” And this posting comes with that same warning. I eat my dinner between 9pm and 10pm and many dieting gurus would say this is no good for weight loss. I did the research, friends, and here’s the real truth:
It doesn’t matter when you eat; a calorie is a calorie.
But here are some caveats:
- The later you eat the more potential snacking time, and therefore calories, you end up with. (My secret weapon: that bag of baby carrots I munch from around 5 pm)
- If you ban eating after a certain time, say 7 pm, you will probably consume fewer calories. (My secret weapon: I spread out the same number of calories throughout the day. I know plenty of early eaters, by the by–Mom, this used to be you–who can’t resist that bowl of custard during the 10 pm newscast)
- Although there is no magic hour after which the body stores more fat, if you’re waiting a long time you may be extra hungry and you might increase your portion size. (My secret weapon: baby carrots again plus a gigantic salad every night at dinner)
- If you like to dine at a fashionable hour like moi, you may be too tired to cook healthy and instead grab slop. (My secret weapon: I do meal prep early, so this isn’t an issue. It’s all ready to go, even if I’m superbad and don’t eat until 10:30 pm)
