SOS: Day 23

Day 23
Could the answer be photography?

Don’t try to fool me. You’re having trouble keeping up your food diary, aren’t you? Before you give up (and remember that keeping a food diary is the number one predictor of weight loss) try an alternate method.

Shoot your food! Take a photo of everything you eat and drink. Using a cell phone camera makes it easy. In theory, this should have a similar effect to writing down everything you consume, and indeed, an article published in New Scientist found it worked  better, at least for the small population studied. I don’t see any reason why you can’t do both, depending on what’s convenient at the moment. Even better, take a picture of your meals to help you remember, and then later fill in your written diary. Double punch.

Update: Two new iphone programs bring a new twist to shooting your food. One photographs scan codes to enter nutrition info and the other estimates calories when you photograph your food. I am testing them both. Reviews to come.
