Just say NO *L*

Sometimes the least Scroogly act
is to say NO *L*!

Just say no to Christmas this year.

This year, I’m saying No to Noel. Who wants to join me?

For some of you, the 25th is a religious holiday, I know, and that comes with its own imperatives. Some of you have kids that would take it the wrong way if Santa didn’t leave a stack under the tree on Christmas morning. Many of you have plans with parents and other family members.

Still, you could pare it down, couldn’t you?

Or you could take the drastic step I’m taking. You could cancel Christmas.

I’m no Scrooge. I love giving gifts. I usually decorate every room in my house for the holidays…lights, several trees, beautiful wreaths.  I like to drive about and check out the neighborhood decorations, cook delicious things, have parties, wrap my gifts in home-made paper, watch great Xmas films.  I’ve got a holiday music collection to rival anyone’s (including funky additions like RuPaul). So it’s not that I detest the whole scene.

I simply realized I’d enjoy holiday extravaganzas even better if they didn’t happen every single year.

So what am I doing instead? The first thing is that I’ve been able to volunteer for my favorite charity more than I would during a normal hectic holiday season. The second thing I’m doing  is a habithacker’s delight (or hell, depending on your mood). Instead of adding more stuff (which usually happens this time of year), I’ve begun a major purge. I’ve put aside 2/3 of my jewelry to donate and so far, about half the clothes I own. (I am ashamed to say I still probably have more clothes and accessories than you do…but I’m working on that, too.)

What else? I am working on some gifts, yes, but they’re all handmade and none of them will be done by the 25th. Which, I’m happy to say, is a decidedly refreshing way to look at things. After all, it’s nicer to get Just-Because gifts, isn’t it?

How about you? Could this be the year you say No *L*?
